Shadows
Film-making duo Vivamax were inspired by the song Voice Shadow by Fox Thomas, to explore the themes of obsession and loneliness. This film forms part of their “Found Footage” project, for which they have set themselves the challenge of using exclusively found footage to create film collages.
The song’s synth modulations suggested the effects of light and darkness on water, a sinister undertow swelling below the the peaceful and harmonious surface, the interplay between wakefulness and the unconscious.
Vivamax’s cutting of scenes highlights the strangeness inherent in everyday places and scenes, as well as a lingering child’s horror of darkness, fascination with ritual and the significance of half-glimpsed, half-remembered events. Whether dreamscapes or reality, the mind traps and transforms memories.
